If you have pain, stiffness, or an ache in your lower back, it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own. Or, you might pass it off as “just a spasm,” a result of having “slept awkwardly,” or that it’s just a bit of stiffness that “everyone your age” suffers from.

In any case, there’s no obvious reason the pain started, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better!

If that is happening to you, you are not alone. We hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, lower back pain and sciatica are THE most common problems that we see at our physical therapy clinic in Bradenton, FL.

When it comes to living with back pain, everybody we see wants to know

“Why is This Happening to Me?”...

or

“Why Am I Still Suffering With Back Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months (Even Years)?”

When most people get back pain, they often think that it’s just going to go away on its own, that they will wake up one morning and like “magic,” it will feel as if the back pain was never there.

However, a year or so later, they are still living with back pain–often even worse than it was when it started.

Does That Sound Like You?

Another scenario we see all the time in our physical therapy clinic is when people go to the doctor’s office, where the doctor tells them to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes.”

Unsurprisingly, this is rarely useful advice. About a month or so later, they end up going back to the doctor because the pain hasn’t got any better. Even worse, they are often given yet another prescription of even stronger pain medications and advised even MORE rest. This repetitive loop explains why so many people aged 50+ are suffering with chronic lower back pain

Has This Type of Thing Happened to You?

What are other reasons why back pain often lasts longer than it should? Well, it’s easy to get confused because you have likely been told different things by different people. There are lots of people out there who are happy to give you your advice, but not all of it is credible.

Maybe you think your back pain was caused by one specific activity, like lifting or sleeping awkwardly, when it was actually caused by years and years of poor posture that weakened your lower back muscles. It’s more likely that the pain from lifting or an awkward sleeping position is just the culmination of that long-term damage. What’s more, after living in pain for so long, your posture worsens in your efforts to compensate for the pain.

If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, back pain can be very confusing, and this leads many people to act as if the pain is ‘just a normal part of life.’

Do You Feel That Way Too?

If You’re Currently Living With Back Pain, Here are 7 Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  • You thought it would go away on its own, so you tried to ignore it, which didn’t work.
  • You went to the doctor who told you to rest and take pain meds, but as soon as they wore off, the pain struck yet again, and the medicine did nothing to help your back.
  • A family member or friend told you that everybody gets back pain as they get older, so you just accepted it
  • You tried other healthcare professionals, or a physical therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help.
  • You tried YouTube exercises but they either did absolutely nothing or made your back pain ten times worse.
  • You thought it would be a good idea to rest because your back pain was so bad, but all that did was make it feel even more stiff and tight.
  • You decided to get a few massages, hoping that would fix the pain, but the relief was only temporary, and didn’t do anything to fix it long term.

If any of these have happened to you, we would love to help you by inviting you to book a call to talk with one of our physical therapists to find out what we can do to help you. The fact that you have tried any or all of these things already is actually a good thing! Because as you find out what doesn’t work, you get closer to finding the thing that does!

What Can I do to Get Rid of My Back Pain Quickly?...

Well, here's 4 things you can do:

  • First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. Many people procrastinate, thinking that back pain will ‘just go away with time,’ but then, a couple of years down the line they are still putting up with the pain, which has either stayed the same or gotten worse
  • Next, do the RIGHT exercises. A very common mistake is when you strengthen muscles that are weak, not taking into account that the muscles could be weak because they are tight and inefficient. Or you focus only on the back when other parts such as your ankles may be a huge part of your problem. One of the best ways to ease your back pain is to do the right series of exercises. The right exercises, organized for you by a physical therapist, will reduce pain and allow you to move freely again in a short amount of time, and make sure that the problems don’t come back anytime soon (or aggravate your back even more like some exercises do)
  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time. Ever tried to get up from the sofa after resting for a while, only to find out you struggle because your back feels so painful and tight? That’s because one of the worst things you can do to add to your back pain is rest or sit for long periods of time. Too much rest and sitting in awkward positions makes back muscles stiff and tight. It would really help if you were given appropriate exercises (alongside hands-on treatment) for better posture to get you active and healthy as quickly as possible.
  • Get real, “hands-on” physical therapy. Manual physical therapy is proven to help people with low-back pain. In fact, at Manual Physical Therapy & Concierge Services, it’s one of the most common injuries we see. If your back pain is affecting your job, your ability to stay active and independent, or gets in the way of spending quality time with family and friends, manual physical therapy can help get you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible.
