If you have been living with chronic pain, stiffness, or aches for years, it’s very tempting to think that this is just how things are, that you just have to live with it, accept it and deal with it.
In any case, there’s no obvious reason the pain started, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better! Especially if it has been years of contact pain.
If that is happening to you, you are not alone. We hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, chronic pain is one of THE most common problems that we see at our physical therapy clinic in Bradenton, FL.
When it comes to living with chronic pain, everybody we see wants to know
“Why is This Happening to Me?”...
or
“Why Am I Still Suffering With Chronic Pain After Putting Up With It For Years?”
When most people experience chronic pain that has been there for years, they often hope that it’s just going to go away on its own, that they will wake up one morning and like “magic,” it will feel as if their chronic pain was never there.
However, after years of dealing with their chronic pain, its still there…. they are still living with the pain–often even worse than it was when it started!
Does That Sound Like You?
Another scenario we see all the time, in our physical therapy clinic, is when people go to the doctor’s office, where the doctor tells them to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes.”
Unsurprisingly, this is rarely useful advice. About a month or so later, they end up going back to the doctor because the pain hasn’t got any better. Even worse, they are often given yet another prescription of even stronger pain medications and advised even MORE rest. This repetitive loop explains why so many people aged 50+ are suffering with chronic pain, and even multiple problems that is causing wide-spread pain.
Has This Type of Thing Happened to You?
What are other reasons why pain often lasts longer than it should and turns into chronic pain that lasts for years?
Well, it’s easy to get confused, because you have likely been told different things by different people. There are lots of people out there who are happy to give you advice, but not all of it is credible.
Maybe you think your chronic pain was caused by something you did and it simply hasn’t healed fully yet. Maybe you had injured yourself a long time ago and you think this is still causing the pain.
It is very easy to think this way, however, it was actually caused by years and years of poor posture that weakened your certain muscles. It’s more likely that the pain you are feeling is just the culmination of that long-term damage.
What’s more, after living in pain for so long, your posture worsens in your efforts to compensate for the pain. Which then causes even more problems where some muscles work harder to compensate for the side that hurts, and others weaken even more because they are no longer used properly.
If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, chronic pain can be very confusing and lasting a whole lot longer than it should, and this leads many people to just accept that they will have to live with the pain since it has been so long already and they have lost hope that they will ever be pain free again.
