If you have been living with fibromyalgia, it’s very tempting to think that this is just how things are, that you just have to live with it, accept it and deal with it since there is no “real” cure for it.

In any case, there’s no obvious reason why the pain started. Maybe you are not even sure what NOT to do so you won’t get yet another flareup. Maybe you have tried many different things in hope to find relief but no matter what you have done or tried; nothing is getting you the relief you are looking for.

If that is happening to you, you are not alone. We hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, fibromyalgia is one of THE most common problems that we see at our physical therapy clinic in Bradenton, FL.

When it comes to living with fibromyalgia, everybody we see wants to know

“Why is This Happening to Me?”...

or

“Why Am I Still Suffering With Fibromyalgia After Putting Up With It For Years?”

They hope to find relief and most likely also try all sorts of things to ease their pain and discomfort.

However, after years of dealing with their fibromyalgia pain, its still there…. they are still living with the pain–often even worse than it was when it started!

Does That Sound Like You?

Another scenario we see all the time, in our physical therapy clinic, is when people go to the doctor’s office, where the doctor tells them to rest when they have a flareup, do light exercises if they can, and to “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes.”

Unsurprisingly, this is rarely useful advice. About a month or so later, they end up going back to the doctor because the pain hasn’t got any better. Even worse, they are often given yet another prescription of even stronger pain medications or other medications that is supposed to help with fibromyalgia and advised even MORE rest. This repetitive loop explains why so many people are suffering with fibromyalgia pain for years and years of constant, debilitating pain.

Has This Type of Thing Happened to You?

What are other reasons why fibromyalgia pain is often so debilitating and lasts for years without an end in sight?

Well, it’s easy to get confused, because you have likely been told different things by different people. There are lots of people out there who are happy to give you advice, but not all of it is credible.

Maybe you think your fibromyalgia was caused by something you did to hurt yourself, or maybe even through excessive stress. Maybe you are not even sure what caused the onset of fibromyalgia and you have written it off that its in your genetics.

It is very easy to think this way, however, it was actually caused by years and years of poor posture that weakened certain muscles. It’s more likely that the pain you are feeling is just the culmination of that long-term damage that then cause fibromyalgia.

What’s more, after living with fibromyalgia for so long, your posture worsens in your efforts to compensate for the pain. Which then causes even more problems where some muscles work harder, and others weaken even more because they are no longer used properly.

If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, fibromyalgia pain can be very confusing and lasting a whole lot longer than it should, and this leads many people to just accept that they will have to live with the pain since it has been so long already, and they have lost hope that they will ever be pain free again.

Do You Feel That Way Too?

If You’re Currently Living With Fibromyalgia, Here are 7 Reasons Why It's Affecting You Longer Than It Should:

  • You thought it would go away on its own, so you tried to ignore it, which didn’t work.
  • You went to the doctor who told you to rest and take pain meds, but as soon as they wore off, the pain struck yet again, and the medicine did nothing to help you find any relief.
  • A family member or friend told you that you may just “accept it” and “deal with it” since it has been so long that you have been in pain, so you just accepted it and lost hope that you will ever be pain free again.
  • You tried other healthcare professionals, or a physical therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help. Maybe they didn’t even understand what you were experiencing.
  • You tried YouTube exercises but they either did absolutely nothing or made your pain ten times worse.
  • You thought it would be a good idea to rest because your pain was so bad, but all that did was make it feel even more stiff and tight.
  • You decided to get a few massages, hoping that would fix, or at least ease the pain, but the relief was only temporary, and didn’t do anything to fix it long term.

If any of these have happened to you, we would love to help you by inviting you to book a call to talk with one of our physical therapists to find out what we can do to help you. The fact that you have tried any or all of these things already is actually a good thing! Because as you find out what doesn’t work, you get closer to finding the thing that does!

What Can I do to Start Getting Relief from My Fibromyalgia?...

Well, here's 4 things you can do:

  • First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. Many people procrastinate, thinking that their pain will ‘just go away with time,’ but then, a couple of years down the line they are still putting up with the pain, which has either stayed the same or gotten worse and their lifestyle is being highly impacted by their fibromyalgia.
  • Next, do the RIGHT exercises. A very common mistake is when you strengthen muscles that are weak, not taking into account that the muscles could be weak because they are tight and inefficient. Or you focus only on the one area that hurts, when other parts such as your back, glutes, and even the abdominal muscles may be a huge part of your problem. One of the best ways to ease your chronic pain is to do the right series of exercises. The right exercises, organized for you by a physical therapist, will reduce pain and allow you to move freely again in a short amount of time, and make sure that the problems don’t come back anytime soon (or aggravate your pain even more like some exercises do)
  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time. Ever tried to get up from the sofa after resting for a while, only to find out you struggle because certain areas of your body feels so painful and tight? That’s because one of the worst things you can do to add to your fibromyalgia pain is to rest or sit for long periods of time. Too much rest and sitting in awkward positions makes muscles stiff and tight. It would really help if you were given appropriate exercises (alongside hands-on treatment) for better posture to get you active and healthy as quickly as possible.
  • Get real, “hands-on” physical therapy. Manual physical therapy is proven to help people with chronic pain. In fact, at Manual Physical Therapy & Concierge Services, it’s one of the most common problems we see.
